I set myself some criteria. I wanted it to be lined, but I didn't want to have to hand slip the lining in. I wanted it to have a three dimensional quality. And I definitely didn't want to sew a zipper around a curve.
I found myself thinking about this project often - in the shower, drifting off to sleep, hanging out the washing, cooking the dinner and slowly I became increasingly confident. Perhaps a little too confident.... I could already see it on Whip Up and in the Long Threads Top 100 Tutorials List for 2011 and I hadn't sewn a stitch!!! I can't believe I just admitted that - I have to contain my ego!
With a well formed idea in my head, I started to sew (and take pictures for the tutorial as I went. How naive of me!!!)
It all started out well. I kept running into Rob's study, excitedly saying "It works, it works!!) But my photos went from this:
It is possible to make a lined, zippered 3D heart shaped purse. See:
I have to say that I now have even greater respect for the people out there creating those fabulous tutorials I see almost every day.
I don't think that there will ever be a tutorial for this purse. I'm not sure that it really would be sharing the love - there was some swearing and the risk of a sewing machine being thrown across the room as I sewed this little project! I wouldn't want to inflict that on others. (I do wonder as I write this, if someone is going to comment that they made something just like this and it was really simple and they have already made a great tutorial. I will hold that person in awe and I will be slightly embarrassed, but forever grateful!)
So, what did I learn from this project?
- Make a prototype before you start taking photos!!!
- If I come up with a great idea that no one else is doing, it means one of two things. I am a genius or (far more likely) there is a reason no one is doing it!!!
- There is always a silver lining (or pink in this case!). I truly believe this purse has potential. There are some ideas in it that I haven't seen used anywhere else. I am going to spend some more cooking, washing and sleeping time thinking about it. Expect to see a tutorial using some of these ideas in the future but it wont be so small, so curved and so fiddly!
- My little sister will always save the day. She will have a Valentine's themed tutorial for you tomorrow! Thanks Cara!!!
